- Triads and 7th chords-
|
|
This exercise is the next step up from
practicing triads. The material will be: major, minor, diminished and
augmented triads and Major 7, dominant 7, minor 7 and minor7b5
chords. A reference note (ex: D) is played before the chord. Once the
reference is established (I'll say which note the reference is), a chord
will be played that will include the reference (ex: G-7). The goal of
the exercise is to correctly understand if the reference is the tonic,
the third, the fifth or the seventh of the chord that has been played
and to name and spell the chord accordingly ( if the reference is the
note D and the chord played is G-7 the correct answer would be that D
sounds like the fifth of a minor 7th chord and since D is the
fifth the chord would be G-7: G, Bb, D, F). The chords will always be
played harmonically, in various octaves and in root position; if you need
extra time you can pause the playback at the end of each chord. As usual,
the answer sheet is provided for you so that you will be able to correct
your mistakes. Use a pencil of a different color to mark them. In time,
this will give you an idea of your progress. Keep all the exercises in
a folder so that they will be available for review.
