Final Exam

Due: Monday, May 6, 2002*

Answer the following question in a clear, concise, and extremely focused 1-2 page paragraph (or more). Be very specific in your answer, as you will only write 1 or 2 sentences for each example. Make sure you have a thesis statement (or topic sentence) that succinctly answers the question and a concluding sentence that wraps it all up. You should also have a list of works cited at the end.

If you are having a hard time thinking of this as a paragraph, then think of it as a series of topic sentences about each of the texts. Then think of how you might organize the sentences so they have the most impact for how the texts we have explored this semester deal with the key themes of the course.

Choose 2 novels, 1 play, 1 short story, 1 poem, 1 film, 1 group project, 1 painting, and 1 advertisement. Using these examples, discuss ONE of the following key concepts of the modernism and the Jazz Age:

subjectivity
alienation
mechanization
the crowd
modern identity
jazz rhythm
double consciousness
duplicity of modern life
self-conscious manipulation of the conventions and traditions of art
race, gender, and class and the modern self

NOTE: Check your work to make sure that you follow the directions. The exam will be graded based on 10 points each for the 9 examples and 10 points for the thesis and concluding statements. If you omit an example, you will lose those 10 points. If you have ANY questions about the directions for the exam, talk to me or e-mail me.
